- What is a dental implant? Dr. O explains what an implant does, its parts, and the cost. He also discusses WHY you should replace a missing tooth with a dental implant for your longterm health.
A dental implant is made up of three main components.
Fixture - This is the titanium root that goes into the bone. The bone heals around and integrates with the fixture to provide stability.
Attachment - Commonly called an abutment, this is what is screwed into the fixture to act as the base of the crown.
Crown - This is the replacement tooth that is attached to the implant.
One common concern is how long it takes to receive an implant. The actual guided implant procedure is very quick, but you typically need to wait 3-4 weeks after having the tooth extracted before the implant can be placed. If the tooth is already missing, the implant may be able to be placed immediately.
For the crown placement, the tooth position will play a role in determining timing. For chewing teeth or back teeth behind your canine teeth, you will need to way at least 3 months, but typically 4-6 months before having the crown placed. When the crown is placed, we call this immediate loading. Back teeth need for the implant to heal and integrate with the bone before being loaded to keep it from moving until it has integrated to provide stability to your tooth. On the other hand, front teeth between the canines can typically have crows placed same day. These are for cosmetic purposes only and should not be used for chewing until the implant has had time to integrate with the bone for stability.
Pricing for implants can be very confusing. This is mainly due to the multiple parts, that may also be performed by multiple offices. When comparing the price of implants, you must compare the total cost of all parts. At Innovative Dental, we provide pricing as a total package cost to simplify the process for our patients. When looking at dental insurance, be sure to ask about a Missing Tooth Clause. In general, if you are missing a tooth when you purchase a policy with such a clause, they will not pay anything to replace that tooth.
While an implant does replace a single tooth, it actually helps restore balance to your full mouth and gives your teeth stability. When you are missing a tooth, things begin to shift and your bite doesn’t stay the same. You will begin to use your other teeth more to make up for the one missing tooth. Over time, this can lead to more expensive and extensive treatments down the road.
One of the most expensive things you can do is leave a missing chewing tooth as this will lead to more expensive issues later on.

I’ve been hoping to get implants from here for a couple of years. I don’t want to go anywhere else but my cost is $50k. I’m worried by the time I can get that much money I won’t even be able to get them anymore. Maybe one day they’ll have grants or some sort of help to cover such big costs. I know it’s cosmetic so my insurance doesn’t cover it; but it’s more than cosmetic.. it is mental & emotional & also there are so many physical ailments we can have from bad teeth.

Yes, dental care is so expensive - it’s better to take good care of your teeth before it goes downhill and cost a crap load to fix!! I’ve unfortunately had to dig into savings but it’s all well worth it for the peace of mind!!

I love it when I see that the crowns, on-lay, etc. are done in the same office that you are in. There were times when I am at my dentist I wished I could speak to the technician directly, and he/she could exame my teeth right there and then when the teeth came back bulky and the grooves on their chewing surfaces were not designed to grasp the foods. I think a good dentist or the techican must always remember this point (I think it stands with the technician, but if I was a dentist, I would exam the final product and make sure there are tiny and deep grooves to ensure the foods can be cut. The first time I had my crowns done, I requested for the chewing surfaces to have more tiny grooves and my crowns functioned so well, cutting the foods like the real teeth. Unfotunately, I totally forgot that detail my second time (a few years later, plus my first experience was so great so I forgot to be very careful about the grooves) and the grooves were sallower and so smooth that I feel like if I was to stand on that chewing surface, I would've just slipped and fell. Attention to details is very important. It's not just an overal art by making the patients' smiles look good, but functionality is also critical.
I just had 4 lower molar implants placed in just over a month ago with bone grafting. It cost me a bit over 8k. The abutments and zirconia molars that will be placed in 5 monthes cost 7k. Thankfully I found a cosmetic dentist that does all the procedures in one location as you do. Yes it is expensive!

Great video! Quick question. Why isnt the crown screwed onto the the metal piece that gets drilled into ur bone. Can't the tooth fall off the abutment since it hasnt been adhered or screwed onto it?

I have reoccurring kidney stones (for the past 30 years). My Docs at the time and for a long time, told me to get off all things calcium and protein etc...
Fast forward to today, my whole skeletal system including my teeth have been effected. Every time I have a dental cleaning or such, and they take an x-ray the tech comes back with a genuine look of distress on their face asking me: Are you aware of the decalcification in your teeth?
Having explained this situation, do you think implants would be hindered if I were to get them?
Look up a condition called hyperparathyroidism. It's glands on your thyroid that control calcium levels in blood. Too much calcium leads to osteoporosis and other issues. It's a simple surgery to correct it.

Hi Doc, I think I send you question regarding my TMJ and misalignment,it’s now over almost 3 weeks my lower right teeth with molar temporary crowned is removed and this is now left without teeth as the tooth where bridge is holding is broken so it is slightly fix on another tooth until I have to finally removed as it’s moving and I cannot eat.Now I’d been suffering from headache and eating with my front teeth. I was told I needed one but my HMO dental insurance through work wouldn't cover it, but the PPO dental insurance would so I waited for the month we can change from one to other.

Great question. Typically if we keep the implant process under a year of total time, then we can prevent any significant shifting. If it is going to take longer, it would be a great idea to get a retainer to help with maintaining the space and the bite. - Dr. O

havent been to the dentist for many years and when i did i was told i need 3 implants on #2 and #31. medical dont cover nothing so im paying out of pocket. 11k is what they want. i feel like its way over priced but im not sure. i live in california.
Well last year I went through the dental implant and right where he was going to do the 2nd step the implant came out and he had to put more bone graphs inside the implant failed at least I only paid $1,800 I never got to the 2nd or 3rd step of my implant. And recently I had go back to my dentist for something else she’s like I recommend that we try it again I’m like no because I also talked to my cousin told her about it she also works at a dentist office and I showed her my X-rays. My whole mouth has pretty much been all crowns and I think I only have 4 teeth left that are mine and yesterday I had one of my top molars removed. My bones in my mouth were not strong enough to hold the implant so for now I’m wearing a dental flipper for that missing tooth 🦷

Wow what a coincidence! I just had tooth #30 extracted today, and got a bone graft to start the implant process! It was an old tooth that I had a root canal done on about 7 years ago. My dentist recommended 6 months before even placing the fixture. Kind of bummed, but at the same time I'm so grateful to have this done, as I see it as in investment. Curious, mini implants, those seem great to me and far less invasive. I have seen used on full arch but are they being used now more on a single tooth? Also less time to heal which is far more appealing for a patient. Those I would consider if ever needed but not the full huge implant into the bone and so close to sinus cavities. They are also less expensive which is a HUGE factor for numerous people who need dental work.
Stay away from mini implants. Working on a video for this one. You will not save money.

I would rather do no prep on them then have new fillings done that could stain again. I'm just so frustrated and depressed little bit with the money I spent on work and it not lasting for even 2 years. I don't want to make the same mistakes again and spend all this money over again to be in the same position.

Great question. I did do a video about this. crowns can leak if they are not properly sealed which is the importance of good exams and xrays. They can also decay around the gum line.

I´m extracting the third molar this week but cant afford an inplant at the moment, is it possible to just place the fixture for now and a year or two down the line when finances are in order finish the procedure ? I heard you should put implants as fast as possible after the extraction because it heals faster and better.
If you're not gonna start the implant process anytime soon, it would probably be best to invest in a retainer to prevent your teeth from shifting into that area because if the gap gets too small, placing an implant there may not be an option anymore

I will tell you what I did. About 5 years ago I had tooth that needed root canal. Like you I couldn't afford to have the root canal. The only option I had was pulling the tooth. You should have it done before the infection spreads. I unfortunately didn't do that. So in my case it did spread. But it was treated with antibiotics. It will also damage the teeth surrounding the one that was pulled. There will be shifting of those teeth. Then you end up eventually needing partial denture. I wished there was better was that was afforable to save the tooth. There just isn't.

Titanium is the best.
In places like Guilford, CT dentists have bigger homes than the movie stars and we have most of the movie stars living there and I went door to door for Green Peace for a few years so I know. Even Chis Rock lives next door or use to a dentist or use to. (Not in CT I think) Doctors might get paid but dentist get their money. Nothing wrong with that. It just costs too much to go and insurance helps little to none if your teeth are in bad shape. What are you to do?
Look into Mexico. Many Dentist have set up offices in border towns. Do your research and you can find a good one.
Believe I get it I have bad teeth too.The only way to fix mine is pulling all of them I found low income dental clinic. By using Google the cost for treatment. Is based on your income. But they don't dentures or implants. So for now after all the teeth are pulled. I found video of lady who took $40 veneers and turned them into. Temporary denture using thermoplastic beads. Will see how it turns out. This type you can't eat with and my husband had all of his pulled. So I found whole bunch of things that we can eat. Things will eventually get better once we can afford our dentures. It is just going to take little longer.

Titanium implants are pure titanium. Very little to no allergies to these.

You would need to have bone graft done to avoid bone loss. I just got one extracted and done right after it.

How about if you are missing very back 2 teeth on both sides of bottom jaw and back 2 on left upper and very back on right just 1 on right upper shoulder I get implants for that of is there something else I should do I'm 32
I recommend implants to replace 1stolars and occasionally 2nd molars. The 2nd molars are more of a priority the younger you are and the less money bleeding to be invested in other parts of the mouth.

The radiation in a cbct is 1/100th of a catscan. The benefits far outweigh the risks.

Whats the success rate of implants
I had bad teeth, not horrible but wanted to get implants. The dentist i went to, i was planing to get a couple removed and go from there because i wasnt sure about insurance, my dentist at the time said it covers it all, he ended up talking me into removing all my teeth except 4 in the front and bottom after i was medicated and not thinking really but i just wanted a nice smile again.... he then tells me after the fact my insurance only covered so much which was an initial concern of mine. In the end i lose my insurance and end up owing him thousands for extractions i didnt want. Now my front teeth are chipped from chewing and its ruined my life.. confidence... my wife left me, im 30, a single dad of three girls, all very young, and its literally ruined my whole life. The mental health alone that it cost me i couldnt put a price on...

I am 16 and I am watching because I lost a permanent tooth because it came out form a hard hit from sports. We tried to save the tooth. It seems like it was going to work. When everything was good I was hit with a discovery of reabsorption. This was meant to happen in a few years but I was unlucky. I just got it extracted and had done a bone graft. I have to wait to get one in a few years 😢.
im in the process of having a permanent bridge to replace 2 front upper teeth, one on either side of my two front teeth. i get the temporary next week and the permanent bridge soon after. the cost is just under 5000.00. makes me wonder now if 2 implants might have been as cheap or cheaper.

I'm going through this right now! It's been the most frustrating process to go through. I can now see why people don't like to go to the doctor/dentist! The insurance process is so flawed! You're either "covered" for some procedures but not others. Ugh!!!!! My infection is deep in the jaw bone so I need to get the implant. I wanted to have a re-treatment but it seems no specialist is willing to take it on! This has been 2 yrs trying to get this done! Just when I find a "specialist" to do it; the insurance doesn't cover the bone treatment/graphing! That will cost me $700. Maybe I need a go fund me page! ☹️😭

Is it true implants has like a 80% rejection? I did research, they said within ten years people have problems with there implants.
My mom has 5 individual implants. The rest are traditional bridge work and crowns. 4 of them failed she had to have them done again. The 5th got infected and had to be done again.

The implant itself if it doesn't fail or get infected should last long time. The crown on top I think is 5 or ten years.

What about 44 yrs old I need 2 on each side is that ok to do???
Maybe think about two at a time spaced out over two to four years depending on what you can afford. (1) Get two bone grafts if needed and two dental implants. (2) Go back a few months later to have the abutment and crown placed. (3) Pay that off over 12-24 months with CareCredit ensuring there are no finance charges and you pay everything off within the "promotional period". (4) Repeat for the other two teeth. It's hella expensive as I've found out but paying over time really helps. It will be at least a car payment a month you'll need to save / pay.

That does seem high. Obviously this does depend on where you live.

To give you some reference, we are about 5k for everything including the abutment and crown. Depending on your benefit plan.
